The FC del Norte was the largest constituent of the RENFE although not by a great margin. Its route mileage exceeded that of the M.Z.A. by less than 100 kms. It built the main line from the French frontier at Hendaye to Madrid, reached Barcelona before the rival MZA line and monopolised all the broad gauge routes to the north coast of Spain.
