The Madrid, Zaragoza & Alicante Railway was the 2nd largest of the constituents of the RENFE and its route mileage in 1943 included the first section of railway built in Spain, that from Barcelona to Mataró, opened in 1848; and the second section of line opened in the country from Madrid to Aranjuez in 1851, that formed the first part of the company’s line to Alicante. The system grew to cover large parts of both the east & the south of Spain.
