The Andean countries offered challenging landscapes for railway engineers often with the need to rise to great heights over relatively short distances. Peru in particular had two railways that started on the Pacific coast and crossed the Andes watershed to reach the interior. The Central of Peru in particular needing spectacular engineering to reach its summit at nearly 16000ft only 100 miles from the coast whilst the FC del Sur summit at La Raya was treble the distance and over 1600ft lower.
