This 80 mile long 3ft gauge railway was opened throughout in 1926 although work had commenced prior to World War 1. The line rises over 1500ft to a little above 12000ft above sea level at Huancavelica. Work had started on a proposed extension back in the 1930s that would have takem the line to a higher summit than the FC Central had it ever been completed.

Between 2006 & 2010 the line was coverted to standard gauge.
