This 149km long 3ft gauge railway was opened to Chaullay in the 1930s although there were plans to go further. A 23km extension to Quillabamba was opened in 1978 but was closed again in 1990 following a major landslide. Aguas Calientes, 110kms from Cuzco, is nowadays the main source of traffic being the station serving Machu Pichu. The climb out of Cuzco on the line includes a series of reverses.
