A number of the early pictures depict some members of the Hellenic State Railways Lb class of
which their were 16 examples. These were built for War Department use by North British
in 1943 and shipped to the Middle East. They were run in on Palestine Railways and then
placed in store at Suez until sold to Greece in 1946 and put into traffic on the line
east from Salonika to the Turkish border at Pithion, They were progressively withdrawn
from service between 1973 & 1976, although seven were still extant in 1997, a couple
of these being located on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, having returned to Britain
in 1984.
Virtually all the pictures in this gallery portray scenes on the SEK, later OSE standard gauge
network starting in the north & proceeding southwards to Piraeus. Here there are also
several pictures on the Piraeus - Perama Light Railway which was effectively an electric
tramway that served the coastal area west of Piraeus for about 40 years until its closure in 1977.
Finally there are three pictures on the Athens–Piraeus Electric Railways, a third rail
electric suburban system between Athens and Piraeus which was absorbed into the Athens Metro in 2011.
There are also a couple of pictures that are not SEK but meytre gauge industrial locomotives
serving the Aliveri Power Station placed alongside the one at Chalcis for geographic connvenience
