The mountainous nature of much of Bulgaria and the need for larger locomotives resulted in the development of a couple of locomotive types with unusual wheel arrangements after 1930. A class of 20 2-12-4Ts of the type illustrated above were built to handle coal traffic over the steeply graded line between Sofia and Pernik. The other virtually unique wheel arrangement used was 4-10-0, when 17 locomotives of this type were built between 1940 & 1943 as a mixed traffic version of the class 03 4-8-2s.
