This page provides a link to many of the closed railway lines across Britain. In this context a line is considered 'lost' if it has been closed to passenger and goods traffic with the railway infrastructure and tracks having been removed.
The majority of lines covered in this section were closed in the mid to late 20th century, during a period of major rationalisation in an attempt to restore railway operations from one of loss to one of profit. As railway closures occured throughout Britain it has been necessary to group them under one of the four railway companies that existed at the time of grouping in 1923. The individual lines covered are listed under the GWR, LMS, LNER or SR headings, for which the relevant links are shown below.
