1,050mm gauge Hedjaz Railway A1A-A1A diesel electric number 40210 built by GEC in 1976 stands in Amman station with a train for Demascus on 8/9/1997. Photo Mike Squire

The photographs here cover the Jordanian section of the Hedjaz Railway that still operates services between Amman and Damascus. The section south of Amman sees no scheduled passenger trains but was a popular location for enthusiast photo charters in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The other system in the country was operated by the Aquaba Railway Corporation to transport phosphates from mines around Maan to the port of Aquaba. Also constructed as a 1050mm gauge line, it opened in 1976 and closed in 2018.
