The Australian owned Colonial Sugar Refining Company began operations in Fiji in the late 19th century. They developed a lengthy 2ft gauge system centred on Lautoka Mill to connect the various mills and transport cane. The Rarawai - Kavanagasau Light Railway extended some 60 miles north of Lautoka and 80 miles to the south; and carried passengers & general freight as well. Control passed to the government owned Fiji Sugar Corporation in 1973.
