The British engineered & financed São Paulo Railway was opened in 1867 after surmounting the need to climb nearly 2700ft in 5 miles from the coastal plain to reach the plateau on which São Paulo is situated. This was achieved by a series of 4 rope worked inclines progressively ascending the escarpment.
