In Rio the Companhia Ferro-Carril Carioca or Santa Teresa Tramway started life in 1877 as a 3ft gauge horse tramway. Some 20 years later it was converted to an 1100mm gauge electric tramway which utilised a long high disused aqueduct between the Santa Teresa and Santo Antônio hills. For much more information about this & other South American tramways check the following site Santa Teresa Tramway
