The Steyrtalbahn began life as a private company which opened its 76cm gauge 40km long line between Garsten & Klaus in stages between 1889 & 1909. It was taken over by the Deutsche Reichsbahn in 1940 following the Anschluss and so passed to the OBB at the end of the war. Passenger services were withdrawn between Molln & Klaus in 1968. A rockfall in March 1980 resulted in the closure of the line south of Grunberg with the remainder of the line closing in 1982. In 1985 the OGEG reopened the section to Grunberg as a tourist operation.
