The original 240km long main line was built to 600mm gauge from Moçamedes to Santa de Bandeira between 1905 & 1923. It was converted to 3ft 6in gauge in the 1950s and work started on extensions that reached Serpa Pinto, 756km east of Moçamedes. The existing 600mm gauge line from Santa de Bandeira to Vilar de Almoster was not converted but was closed a few weeks after the above picture was taken.
